The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded a grant to The Hampshire & Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology which enables a programme of recording and investigation of the archaeological remains of watercraft and their associated maritime infrastructure on the River Hamble. It is evident that there is a wealth of heritage connected to the maritime past around the river margins. We this project we are able to research and record these important remains to create an archive of information which will be fully accessible and will aid future management of these sites.
Local residents and river users are an invaluable resource for this project, and the project has been interviewing local people. Many people have an extensive knowledge of the river and if it is not recorded it runs the risk of being lost forever. The collection of these accounts of the river and its history is being used to supplement field investigations. The information they have, gives an insight into the origin, date, identity and function of many features found on the river. This route of enquiry is on-going. There are numerous remains of archaeological sites around the River Hamble, including wrecks, wharfs, jetties, shipbuilding sites, oyster beds, and bridges amongst others, where local knowledge will continue to present a new perspective. Since February 2007 Archaeologists from the HWTMA and local volunteers have been visiting and recording these archaeologically interesting sites.
If you feel that you can offer help with these fascinating investigations by allowing us to visit and view any information that you believe may be relevant; such as photographs, maps or associated objects, or indeed if you are willing to share with us you memories and experiences we would be extremely grateful. Or if wish to get more ‘hands-on’, there will be numerous opportunities for you to be become actively involved with your heritage during an extensive programme of site recording, which will continue through the autumn of 2007. If you have the time and you wish to participate in this exciting project please do not hesitate to contact HWTMA.
