Intertidal
There is a wealth of maritime archaeology to be found in the inter tidal zone. Although this can be a challenging environment both for archaeological remains and for undertaking fieldwork the heritage resource is vast. Just a few of the types of sites found in and around the shores of the Solent and its tidal tributaries include abandoned or hulked vessels, fishing structures, hards, landing places, salt making, brick making, shell fish beds, cargo scatters from unloading vessels and trackways. As many of these sites have not been archaeologically recorded the HWTMA has developed projects to identify sites, assess their potential and significance, and undertake detailed survey work.
