Marine Archaeology for the Masses

The Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology tested their brand new Education and Outreach mobile facility in Southampton last week when they visited the Solent Careers Festival and the National Oceanography Centre.

The outreach unit specially designed and created to bring marine archaeology to the masses, is a mini-museum-on-wheels equipped with the latest gadgets and packed with exciting treasures uncovered from the deep. Some of the finds on-board include artefacts recovered from shipwrecks as well as objects and tools (used by ancient humans) found in the many submerged landscapes by marine archaeologists. One visitor to the unit said: "Stepping into this van is like stepping into a museum. I didn't realise the Solent hides so much history beneath the waves. It's quite unique to have this kind of information out here for the public and I think it is really cool that we get to see it and hear about it without going into a museum." A unique and fun learning experience, the mobile outreach unit will soon be heading on a Hampshire-wide tour. If you would like the mobile outreach unit to come to a place near you, please contact the Trust's Education and Outreach team: Caroline Barrie-Smith at cbs@hwtma.org.uk or Gareth Owen at gareth.owen@hwtma.org.uk
