HWTMA Celebrating archaeology at Fort Cumberland

This weekend, staff and volunteers from our Outreach team launched the Festival of British archaeology with activities and games in Portsmouth.

English Heritage opened up their facilitates at Fort Cumberland over the weekend 18-19 July to celebrate archaeology as a part of the Festival of British Archaeology. Over 2,000 people visited the Fort during the course of the weekend, a record number compared to pervious years.

HWTMA was there to offer children (of all ages!) an opportunity to find out about and get involved with maritime archaeology.

At our tables people could pilot a miniature ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle), reconstruct the face of a Stone Age person and see how good they were at identifying artefacts they could not see.

In addition, people were able to learn about the objects they found, handle bones, survey shipwrecks, see bugs, and be landscape detectives.

HWTMA will continue to celebrate the Festival of British archaeology that runs until Sunday the 2nd August so keep an eye on our website to find out where we will be next
