Free Maritime Workshop for schools

Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology are offering a fun and hands-on in-school learning experience where pupils will have a chance to learn about their maritime heritage, marine life and the aggregate industry.

Using real archaeological artifacts and information from archaeologists and aggregate extractors, this workshop provides a wonderful opportunity for studying history, science, geography and biology and relating these subjects to the real world.

The workshops are aimed at Key stage 2 and 3 pupils and can take place during February and March 2009 at your school.  The time scale for the workshop is flexible as we can offer session from one hour up to a whole day.

The relationship between the aggregate industry, maritime archaeologists and marine biologists is important but little understood. Everyone involved has to learn to understand each others' needs, so that the marine heritage and biodiversity can be protected, without preventing the extraction of gravel that is so essential for building our houses and roads. Using fun, hands-on activities, these workshops teach children that different industries share information and work together, ensuring the protection of wildlife and maritime heritage for future generations.
