Who are the friends?
The Friends of the Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology are a group of people with a keen interest in their Maritime Heritage and a strong desire to see it preserved.
The Friends attracts members from all walks of life, from career seamen, divers and yachtsmen to amateur archaeologists, walkers and families. Anyone is welcome to join and we offer activities that everyone can participate in and enjoy.
Friends are given an insight into coastal sites by Frank Basford (IOW Archaeological Unit) while on an walk along Tennyson Down.
Recent funding from the Local Heritage Initiative has enabled us to expand the scheme and offer more activities. These include:
- Titchfield Canal Walk
- Fieldschools with NAS Training
- Prehistory Walk in the West Wight
- Talks by local maritime archaeologists and historians
- Developing a Friends area in the Underwater Archaeology Centre
- Establishing a Friends Committee to provide the activities that you want
